Example of a Domain Life Cycle
Yellow – Domain is available for registration. Nobody has registered the domain.
Green – The domain is registered, and active. This means that it can be actively used for a website, or email services.
Registered: your domain will be active for the number of years it has been paid for.
Expired, Auto-Renewed Grace: If you forget to renew your domain, it will be suspended 7 days from the expiry date and related services will stop. After expiration, the domain enters a Grace Period of 0-44 days. During this period, you can renew without penalty. If not renewed, the domain enters the Redemption Grace Period.
Red – The domain hasn’t been renewed. Any services such as a website or email services will stop working.
Redemption: If your domain enters redemption, it is possible to renew and restore the domain, however there is a restore fee associated with this.
Pending Delete: Once a domain goes into the ‘pending delete’ phase, renewal is no longer possible.
Blacknight will send 3 notifications to remind you to renew your domain before the expiry date. Emails are sent 30, 7 and 3 days before the expiry date. You will get a final email on the expiry date to let you know that the domain has expired.
Most domains can be transferred to another registrar post expiry, as long as the domain hasn’t reached the ‘redemption grace period’.
