How To Transfer Your Domain

If you would like to move your domain from your current registrar to us we are more than happy to help you.

The domain transfer methods for IE domains, com's and .uk's are covered below. Also, please read our notes about transferring your domain

• Be Aware that the transfer of domains can take some time to fully complete.
  • .ie domains typically transfer within 48 hours.
  • .com domains can take up to 7 days in some cases
  • .co.uk can take a little as one day to transfer, but you should allow up to 7 days.
  • Transferring the billing of a domain name DOES NOT transfer your email or website content. Please read our guide to moving hosting provider.

For IE domains the process is very simple:

1. Place your order online using our order form.
2. Make payment
3. Fax us (+353 (0)59 9164239 ) a signed letter on your headed paper authorising the transfer of your IE domain to us. If you do not have access to a fax machine we will accept scanned letters, but they must be signed.
   

   Your letter should take the following format:
   
   I, ADMIN CONTACT hereby authorise the transfer of SOMEDOMAIN.IE to AAE553-IEDR with immediate effect.
   
   Yours,
   ADMIN CONTACT

NB: This must be signed by the listed admin contact for the domain. If the admin contact is no longer with the company the template should be edited to include this new information eg:

"The listed admin contact X no longer works for us. I am now responsible for this matter"

The above wording is a guideline. All transfer requests must be legible and signed.

In May 2006 the IEDR updated their transfer policy. This new policy means that newly registered .ie domains cannot be transferred as easily as before. Please ready the policy before proceeding with a transfer.

If your .ie domain was registered recently with another provider you may request a DNS update. If you encounter issues with this please let us know

For com/net/org/info/biz/.eu the system is quite different.

You will need to ensure that your domain's details are correct and that the listed email address is the correct one.

1. Transfer requests for com/net/org/info/biz/.eu produce an email in order to confirm the request, so you should have access to the email account associated with your domain(s).
2. If you cannot access the email address associated with the domain(s) you wish to transfer you will need to contact the current registrar.
3. Be aware that in some cases you will need to remove "registrar lock" before the domain transfer can be processed.

• For security reasons ALL transfers will need the "authorisation key" or "password" (EPP).

If you are moving from an ISP, such as Eircom, Esat or UTV, please make sure that your account is in order with them, as billing issues can cause delays.

The larger Irish ISPs and hosting companies will respect requests for domain transfers to other companies provided no billing issues exist.

In the case of domains registered through Joker you will need to initiate the transfer process from within the Joker control panel.

NB: You cannot transfer between registrars until the domain is 60 days old.

If you are not sure about the procedures please let us know and we will guide you in the right direction.

1. Contact your current hosting company, requesting that they change the current Registrant's Agent Tag (IPS Tag) to ours: BLACKNIGHT-IE
   • Generally this will go through without any issue, however if it does not, due to inactivity or unwillingness on behalf of your current hosting provider, you can request that Nominet initiate the change for you.

2. Once the tag has been changed to us, we need to be explicitly requested to change the nameservers to our own.
3. Once we receive this request we will change the site's nameservers over to our own.

• Please be aware that different hosting providers may have different directory structures, so your website code may require some modification to work after the transfer.


• Most Databases can be easily transferred from your old hosting provider to us, but we will have to change the database details, including the database name, the usernames & the passwords. As such, modifications will have to be made to your website's code.


• The migration of website files and data from an existing hosting provider to Blacknight is the sole responsibility of the client. We can however supply our professional services for this purpose and our sales department will happily provide a quote for this.


• We highly recommend an appropriate testing period after you have transferred a domain to us.
